Think i have bought 9-10 books over the years, including a new one if traveling back to same country 5 or more years later. Great detail, best towns and sites to see, best areas to stay, travel time between towns. Way worth the $25 bucks. Gives you access to the RS website where u can download audio tours.
I always turn to Rick Steves when I’m traveling. He has never steered me wrong!
A lot of useful information. Bought book to do research on the islands. Not enough. Got more information on the internet. It’s a good all around guide. You can add on and take notes.
The book covers Greece and the popular islands -Santorini,Mykonos very well. I have bought other books written by the author - safe bet.
Greece is one of the birthplaces of Western Civilization, with two or three thousand years of history on display for the enterprising traveler. For those of you who treasure Greek cuisine, it doesn't get any better than this. Even if your only connection to Greece is getting goosebumps from the opening theme to the movie "The Guns of Navarone", that history is here too. Rick Steves has the details and some excellent recommendations in this new guide to Greece. Of note, although Athens gets the lion's share of the tourists, there is more to see in the rest of Greece. Steves has provided excellent travel commentary for the Peloponnese, the long peninsula south of Athens and once home to the Spartans. There is also useful information on a selected number of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. As with other Rick Steves guides, do yourself a favor and read the whole book before making hard plans. The detailed commentary should facilitate some smart choices about your best Greek vacation. Very well recommended to the enterprising traveler.
We used this book on our '23 summer trip to Athens and Anti-Paros. It was an excellent resource for Athens. We did the self guided audio tours around the Placa and Acropolis/Parthenon. The audio tours are separate applications that you install on your phone. Perhaps you don't need the book for those, but the book helps out in getting around and filling you in on obvious and not so obvious sights. I highly recommend it. I think the only drawback was the fact that I was more interested in learning about the history than my children. The children did stick with the walking tours for the most part, but they did get bored of the audio bits.
We were on a Greek Classical tour with Collette Tours. They dropped us off in Nafplio to explore on our own! My husband and I were able to tour the town with this guide and enjoyed it very much. I think Rick Steves is updating many of his European books so I might wait to see if he does one on Greece.
I have read most of the book in preparation to go to Greece for the first time. It is very comprehensive and informative about Athens but doesn't cover many of the islands, including Crete. Other than that, I would highly recommend!
