The instant #1 New York Times bestseller! A bold new vision for optimizing our health now and in the future What if depression, anxiety, infertility, insomnia, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, dementia, cancer and many other health conditions that torture and shorten our lives actually have the same root cause? Our ability to prevent and reverse these conditions - and feel incredible today - is under our control and simpler than we think.
The key is our metabolic function - the most important and least understood factor in our overall health. As Dr. Casey Means explains in this groundbreaking book, nearly every health problem we face can be explained by how well the cells in our body create and use energy.
To live free from frustrating symptoms and life-threatening disease, we need our cells to be optimally powered so that they can create “good energy,” the essential fuel that impacts every aspect of our physical and mental wellbeing. If you are battling minor signals of “bad energy” inside your body, it is often a warning sign that more life-threatening illness may emerge later in life. But here’s the good news: for the first time ever, we can monitor our metabolic health in great detail and learn how to improve it ourselves.
Weaving together cutting-edge research and personal stories, as well as groundbreaking data from the health technology company Dr. Means founded, Good Energy offers an essential four-week plan and explains: The five biomarkers that determine your risk for a deadly disease. How to use inexpensive tools and technology to “see inside your body” and take action.
Why dietary philosophies are designed to confuse us, and six lifelong food principles you can implement whether you’re carnivore or vegan. The crucial links between sleep, circadian rhythm, and metabolism A new framework for exercise focused on building simple movement into everyday activities How cold and heat exposure helps build our body’s resilience Steps to navigate the medical system to get what you need for optimal health Good Energy offers a new, cutting-edge understanding of the true cause of illness that until now has remained hidden. It will help you optimize your ability to live well and stay well at every age.

I was getting so confused with the keto diet and then the low carb diet and then vegan diet and then the Mediterranean. Just a vacillation of information to me kept me from having an optimal diet because I just felt like throwing my hands up in the air. The way this woman’s communicates, teaches and writes is genius. She goes through so much and the way that she describes it is heartfelt and passionate and truly brilliant. I have told so many people about this book. It not only tells you how to do things that tells you why and it’s things that makes sense. This goes down as the single most motivating book I have read in regards to health (A couple chapters of the Comfort Crisis book further proved what Good Energy is about). This author of Good Energy is a crazy genius and I’m so glad I saw her on a podcast and then bought the book. my whole life has changed. I think her so dearly for all that she gave up to be a pioneer in her life to know what she knows and having asked the questions she has asked of not only herself, yet her family and patients and friends and now every reader. The bears her heart, mind and soul in this book and it made all the sense in the world to me.. I will buy every book this woman writes!
I had assumed, based on an interview with her brother/ co-author, that this book would delve more into the conspiracies amongst big ag, pharma and the US government. I was wrong. Ms Means writes pedantically, like a self help author does, I wasn't looking for that. Many medical terminologies that are discussed, instantly become abbreviated, like "HRV". I read the description once, forgot it, but I'm supposed to remember HRV. I don't read doctor's books because I'm smart, but because I want to learn. Dr. Means is correct in telling us that our food choices are bleak and that we need to choose better options for our own good. I was aware of the problems ahead of having read this book, but I was hopeful for journalism instead of recipes. I continue to search for grass fed butter, but have yet to meet it. In fact, I have never witnessed butter be much more than a solid or a liquid. Don't get me wrong. There is a lot of really good information available in this book with a lot of words, but it could have been half as long - even without the abbreviations. The recipe section kinda hurt me a little. Feeds how many? Blender! Dried spices vs. fresh? Blender! Cast iron skillet? Blender! Okay, I'm exaggerating a lot, but there's some blender instructions that seem like crazy calories to me. Smoothies are not your friend. Maybe marketing got involved around the time when we were advised to seek mental health counseling: "at least one appointment". That's some crazy sh*t right there. Under what or whose advice did this suddenly become necessary? Overall I'll recommend this book, with caveats. The first half, even with the alphabet soup, was very useful. The middle bit was a regurgitation of the first. The last, worst part was the incriminating life advice, cringe all day. I knew I didn't want to hang out with you and now I know why. I got the Kindle version, so maybe the printed copy has pictures, mine does not. Recipes need pictures, not my rule, ask Betty Crocker, but the kinds of dishes Dr. Means is serving sound like punishment.
I love this book! Only part way through but it's an easy read. Dr Means is extremely intelligent but she explains everything in a way that a dumb welder like me can understand without sounding condescending. You can tell she truly wants to simply get the information out there to the public. Information I might add, that the vast majority of health care providers will not tell you. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and take back your health with this book!
I just love this book! I started to read it and had to take some time to process before I proceed - so much detailed and useful information! Thank you so much. There are some people that will get it from me on their bdays and some for Christmas 🥳
A quick read, nothing technical, she makes valid points. Good info about what the lab tests so commonly ordered mean. Also a good discussion about the difference between the "normal" for a population and evidence-based data on what is optimal. A few too many recipes for me, and too much critique of modern healthcare. He points are valid, but a bit strident for my taste.
I have read most of the great books on this topic starting in 2017. This is by far the most up to date and complete book I have read to date. Very well written and so full of facts you will want to buy both the hard cover and the audio book so you can refer back to the text. The Audio book is full of feeling because it it read by the author who does a wonderful job showing empathy and emotion for what we are all going through as obese americans. Men be advised that this contains details for women which are greatly needed if you are female so you need to understand this going in and heed the differences. I am a man and got a lot out of it and will use this as a guide and reference with my wife and daughter as we work to regain our health. Great thanks to the authors for all the work and "guts" to make this book.
Watched the interview with the author and her brother on Tucker. A lot of very good info and it makes sense! We are what we eat. Good health info. Easily explained.
Dr. Casey & her brother Calley are amazing. I saw them on both Andrew Huberman & Tucker Carlson's podcasts & wowzer did they lay out the case so eloquently & thoroughly (backed by a ton of data & research) for why we need to change our eating habits, exercise habits & farming techniques. And how our mitochondria & metabolism are being greatly impacted by what we eat. They discuss the chronic disease epidemic that's going on in America & the long-term impacts. It's some scary, sobering stuff. This book is an absolute must read. She's a great writer & lays things out very well. It's worth the price for the investment of knowledge that comes accompanies it.
