I really enjoyed this book. It helped me to think about what I’m thinking about.
I had been seeing this book here and there over the last few months but hadn’t gotten around to reading it. One day, Jennie Allen was featured on the Bible App’s story which made me finally decide to read it. I still didn’t buy it right then, but while watching a sermon on YouTube later that day, I heard the Holy Spirit tell me to buy the book. I did so right then and started reading it later that night before bed. Before I put it down to go to sleep, I already knew why He pushed me to read it. God has been dealing with me about spiritual warfare which is something that sort of pushes her into a season that became the experience that led her to write this book. From there, she talks about her experiences with negative thought spirals and how she was able to get a hold of it. (Maybe not completely, but does anyone fully stop them?) I have been dealing with this essentially my whole life, but things really made a turn for the worst about 8 years ago. And for the next 6 years, it took me to the darkest days I’ve ever seen. God has been pulling me out over the last 2 years, and this book really helped me to truly find my light. I’ve highlighted many things and saved them as images to look back through from time to time because I know it’s never a one and done. I’ve seen some references from people who didn’t like or finish the book because of her “middle class white woman” references or her perceived ramblings. (These have come from people of color and white women alike.) I’m a black woman, and I disagree. I don’t like Starbucks’ overpriced, tar-tasting coffee nor the overly sweet stuff either, but the references did not throw me off so that I could not understand the basic point she was making. Nor does it annoy me so much that I couldn’t continue reading. As the author, she should be free to share her life and experiences as she feels necessary to show God’s hand on her life and heart. And yes, I understand that you are free not to read it if you so choose. I’m just making a point. Also, some say that it wasn’t practical so they didn’t finish it. Well, the application piece is the last section of the book, so you missed it, sis. Nevertheless, I cannot guarantee that it will help you, but I can tell you that it blessed me.
Only on the 4th chapter and can’t put it down. So good, it’s been such a good read and very encouraging/insightful.
I want to start off by saying that I bought this book when I was needing a push, and it did just that. The book itself focuses majorly on the concept of having a choice, and I think the author does very well at enunciating this point throughout and showing how you can work through these choices. I think that the overall themes and messages are super strong, though the books starts to feel a bit redundant pretty early on. The same ideas are restated over and over, which is good in the sense of placing emphasis on what’s important, but it got a little hard to read at times because I felt like I kept reading the same words sentence after sentence. Overall I would definitely recommend this read, it did help me reframe my thinking and it does well at incorporating God into mental illness without sounding super preachy (she does well at explaining the Bible verses and relating to them).
Really good book! Loved it!
This book has been so helpful with my growth. The author is so authentic and vulnerable and great putting thoughts and feelings into words. Yet so edifying in a comforting way. Beautifully written.
