This book was sent to me for review through Netgalley, but in no way impacts my review. This is the quintessential PERFECT graphic novel to me. I loved the characters, there was enough going on in the storyline/plot to give it depth, the artwork was absolutely gorgeous. Just all around amazing. I've already bought the book because I loved it so much. If you're looking for a fun graphic novel in the same vein as kiki's delivery service, scooby doo, or any other cute/ya type spooky then I highly recommend this book. In Hooky we are following a set of young twin witches, Dorian and Dani. Dani is our athletic witchy girl but does struggle with performing spells. Dorian is a bookworm, a bit antisocial, clumsy, but absolutely phenomenal with magic. We meet them on the first page missing the bus to magic school which you can only arrive at/know the location of if you are on the bus. Thus, they go on the quest to find a magical tutor. Throughout their time, they soon learn that the witches are turning against humans and will kill the king to replace him with the "king of witches" (should be monarch of witches or something because they often refer that it could be a female as well, but you get the gist). It is announced that Dani and/or Dorian are highly likely to be this monarch, even though they appear to be good. We also have a few side characters that are so much fun. Princess Monica, Damien, Will, Mark, and Nico. We even get to meet a fire-breathing frog (Toad?) named Carlo! The characters are such a blast to learn about and I loved this book and need the next one IMMEDIATELY THANK YOU!
If you like magic, witches, whimsy, and coming of age stories filled with drama check this out! The art is beautiful and only gets more and more beautiful as the volumes go on, give this a try!!
Review from my daughters, Paige (13) and Laly (10): Twelve-year-old twin witch brother and sister, Dani & Dorian Wytte, missed the bus to school. They knew their parents would get angry if the twins missed school, so they went to their Aunt Hilde's for education, but an incident happened at the Floating Rock (the Witches' prison). So, they became wanted criminals and had to find a place to stay. Paige’s thoughts: That's just the beginning of this magical adventure (from the digital comic platform WEBTOON) with many twists and turns! This series is getting better every time you turn the page. I snickered at all those jokes throughout the series. I loved Dani the best because she was often so funny at the most severe times. Sometimes, we need her sense of humor to overcome those profound moments. Dorian was a Mr. Know-it-all and showed off occasionally. And guess what? On September 5th this year, Hooky's third and last book was published. The third is my undisputed favorite of all the Hooky books I have read. The cover and plot are beautiful, and the ending (I can't spoil what happens) was bittersweet. The gorgeous artwork is a long graphic novel you will fly through. This series dives into friendship, family, good vs. evil, and love. It's a series I would reread more than once. Give this graphic novel series to fantasy lovers who love a rich, magical world and beautiful artwork. Laly’s thoughts: Each book was terrific. I loved the story; it was creative, and I adored the art; it was so good! My favorite character was Princess Monica because she was a vivid character with passion and love for her fiancé. She also had a perfect fashion sense! Nico was a funny character and a little tragic because of his backstory. Dani and Dorian were charming. They both were creative characters with their diverse personality. I also loved their matching outfits. The books are thick; you can feel the weight of words. The pages contain many words, so this graphic novel takes work. But the book is worth the words. It's a fantastic witch fantasy tale. Happy Reading, Paige & Laly 📚 ❤️
