Zatanna is, and I do not think I am exaggerating here, the most under-utilized character DC has to offer. A stage magician, and a REAL mage, Zatanna is something rare in the DC universe, a character whose work-hero balance falls more on her professional life. Zatanna has always been one of my favorite characters, so I was glad DC finally gave her a full collection. Zatanna live in LA, California, performing to a sold out crowd every night. But she's still a superhero, and in this collection she has run ins with her ex-boyfriend John Constantine, mobster mage Brother Night, her cousin Zachary Zatarra, and many more. Zatanna is such a fun character, and I was happy to see the artwork kept up with the possibilities Zatanna's power set provides. I only wish there could have been more.
The art style changes through the collection of stories so one of them should be your favorite look for Zatanna. The are all stand alone and kept me focused even though story arks are my preferred style. Blessings, Michael Burgess
Arrived as described in great condition !.. Very Happy.
Okay, I use this collection a lot in my fanfic writing because it gives a really good base of Zee and her personality and powers, so if you are looking for a useful feel of our favorite magician this is a great book for you. Read each story a few times to really enjoy all the little details of her. I found like in all collections like this, some artists are more cartoony, not a fan of Rick Mays here, but the more realistic and traditional artists that make up the majority of the volume really do a beautiful job at capturing her grace and power, my favorites being Cliff Chiang, Jamal Igle, Jesus Saiz. The stories themselves are fun and interesting, with those neat spins that make her world so intriguing, the intersection of the ordinary and the magical. I like how she is portrayed, sometimes temperamental and wickedly accurate in handing out justice but mostly genuinely kind, hard working, and swift thinking. She is one of the most human feeling supers out there and her stories depict both the crazy cosmic stuff heroes take on as well as the very ordinary crap and dull common stuff everyone endures. One of my favorite things is how she uses her brains, her physical skills, her years of experiences, and her powers together to deal with her problems rather than rely only upon her magic access. It makes her feel like what a real magician would actually be like. Glamour and climatic balancing out with ordinary and personal. The stage and everything behind it, to give a sense of wholeness to her. I really recommend you get this volume if you want a good realistic sense of Zee as a real feeling person.
Great artwork and fun stories! Zatanna deserves to be far more popular with the comic fans! Daer Siht Seires Won!
This is my first time reading anything about Zatanna but have been interested in the mystical side of super heroes. They always seem to exist in their own universe like Justice League Dark and so I thought I'd dip my toe into this collection. The collection is pretty random. I've been buying collections of consecutive issues but this was a collection of loosely related issues. Brother Night showed up multiple times which I wasn't sure if thst meant that he was Zatanna's main rival. That would be extremely disappointing since he didn't seem that interesting. The story arcs that occur in this (some stories are just one-offs) are great but don't last too long. It felt like watching a mini-series versus a season of something. That was underwhelming since I wanted more interaction, payoff and dialogue in the story and with the characters. It's worth the read just for the brain pain I had to endure deciphering the constant spellcasting. It seems like a cheap gimmick at first but I found it to be endearing pretty quickly. Plus, there's one story that puts a really clever twist on the backwards spell casting.
What a charming run. This collection of Zatanna comics is bundled together with sturdy graphic novel quality binding and thick pages, so it'll stand nicely on a bookshelf - you'll definitely want to place it there afterwards, because this thing has a lot of good to offer. Without spoilers, this Zatanna collection features multiple story arcs with a good range of tone and themes. Zatanna's character is versatile in that she can plausibly interact with heroic DC staples like Batman and Superman, or venture into DC's grungy underbelly and work with characters like John Constantine, or other Vertigo branded identities. Mostly, the stories here are of her independently doing her own thing. After all, she is the star of these comics. Zatanna's stories are often raunchy, amusing, and very weird. She's a character of immense power and capabilities, but her humanity has her committing acts of questionable morality, even if not for nefarious reasons. Timely additions of single and double-paged full panel add dramatic emphasis and show off top-shelf artistry when appropriate. Teens and adults alike will find lots to love in these pages. Believe in magic!
Many others have already provided a deep review so I'll just say that I truly enjoyed this collection. I missed the run when it came out and this book gave me all the enjoyment I otherwise would have missed. Bottom line: if you are a Zatanna fan you want this book. You get great insight into the character. You wonderful storytelling and artwork. It is a compelling narrative without all the superhero noise/destruction/etc. It is a great overall package you will revisit time and time again. Treat yourself to a quality experience. Uoy lliw evol ti!
