Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is back…and honestly, for my money, it’s better than it’s ever been. Jonathan Hickman’s “Ultimate Spider-Man” – which essentially acts as the flagship title for Marvel’s new “Ultimate” line– wraps up its inaugural volume with 6 issues that somehow manage to feel simultaneously fresh, interesting, dynamic, and – most of all – like pure, undiluted SPIDER-MAN. As is the case with most “Ultimate” titles, there are deviations made to the typical lore we associate with the characters here, some of them fairly drastic; however, what Hickman DOESN’T neglect is the feel, the VIBE, of the character. From the first page of issue #1 to the last page of issue #6, this feels like the Spider-Man that we all know and love, but tailored for a newer, more modern sensibility. In other words? It just plain rocks, and an absolute pleasure to read each and every month. I’ve been on record for absolutely loving pretty much everything that this new “Ultimate” line has done, ever since “Ultimate Invasion” kicked things off last year. To my eyes, however, Hickman’s “Ultimate Spider-Man” is the crown jewel of the line, one that deserves even modicum of success it’s received. I sincerely can’t wait to see where it – and the line as a whole – goes next.
This new version of Spider-Man is very fresh and weird in so many neat little ways. As someone who loved the original Ultimate Spider-Man series by Bendis, I enjoyed the heck out of this first volume, and sad that I have to wait until march of next year to get the next!
its sooo amazing i love ulimate spiderman!!!!!!!!!!!!
This first story arc is FANTASTIC! Old Spider-Man fans will love this take on Peter/Spider-Man. Hickman has done an amazing job here and I cannot praise it enough. The art, the story, it’s all AMAZING! Please read this if you are a Spidey fan. I do think it will hit home with fans that have families of their own. Stop reading this and buy the book!
