This book is for all 80s kids that grew up with the Turtles. With all the TV show evolutions that happened and are still happening, this graphic novel kept to our childhood and would capture the interest of next generations. You will feel the psychological turmoil, grief, and pain our hero goes through. It's a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I highly recommend this read. So pick it up and cry along with me as a chapter of our childhood closes when you finish this amazing graphic novel.
Absolutely a must read. Doesn't matter if your a TMNT fan or just a casual consumer of comics. Beautiful art and a great story will keep you engaged till the end.
TLDR: Do yourself a favor - if you're planning to get this book, stop thinking, and just get it. For maximum enjoyment, go in blind, as in don't search for "last ronin" online, especially on sites like Youtube as you'll be riddled with spoilers in the form of suggested videos. Avoid reading the description of the other Last Ronin books like the "Lost Years". Some genius decided to spoil who the last ronin is in the book's description of "Lost Years"...grr. Even if you're spoiled, or new to the series, I swear you're still going to appreciate the story, it's that darn good. Oh, it's also a perfectly self-contained story presented in its entirety here. (The series does continue in its own multiverse aka Ronin-verse, but I'm not as invested.) Longer version: I'm still in awe that this came out in 2022. Everything in pop culture since 2012-ish has been lazy, and/or lackluster at best, but the critics can't stop celebrating them despite the mediocrity of those "masterpieces". If you're a TMNT fan in any capacity, or a fan of comics at all, this is a necessary read. I grew up with the 80s cartoons, played video games, and absolutely love the 2003 + 2012 animated series. Back to the book, the plot is so powerful and poignant that I was almost in tears toward the end. (That's when I realized this is a timeless piece, a work of art.) I'll be proud to own this impeccable piece on an "ultra-sized" hardcover format a la DC's Absolute/Marvel's Gallery with extras + variant covers if IDW makes it available. Thoughts on the story: Well-done Eastman, Laird, Waltz, and team, you killed it! I read it in one setting ~2 hours, which NEVER happens these days. I've been having attention issues, and I can barely read something for over 45 minutes without getting distracted. To conclude, call it (minor) criticism, or call it nitpick: the main villain could've used a bit more characterization. Build details of this edition: Format: Hardcover. (Oversized; sized like a DC deluxe edition.) Binding: Sewn and sturdy. Made in China. Pages: Thick paper, slightly glossy. Gutter loss: Little to none. Slipcover: None Dust jacket: None Packaging: Usual Amazon shenanigans - meaning getting a book in mint/near mint condition is a miracle. I did return the first copy, because it had many tiny dents, and some nicks.
I can’t say enough good things about this book. I don’t want to share any spoilers so I’ll just say that this book is a MUST for any TMNT fans. It’s a dark and violent tale of the last surviving turtle and I was shocked at every page turn, in the best way possible. The artwork is beautiful and the print quality is glorious. The book is well made, and the pages are vibrantly soaked with color and life. Don’t hesitate, pick this up today and start your journey with the Last Ronin.
This is one shell of a book. I'm gonna start with the only 2 downsides I've had: 1. No issue 8 😔 Not a dealbreaker in any way, but this is an excellent and beloved issue. I understand why it is the way it is with Simms, but it still sucks. 2. This won't bother a lot of people, but I wish this had the commentary by Eastman and Laird like the Ultimate B&W do. On to the positives; It's a beautiful book, looks amazing on the shelf, and it feels very well put together (but feels very lightweight compared to how it looks!) This thing is huge! 22 issues in one book?! Insanity! The issues in this book are absolutely iconic. The one shots in particular are legendary in my book. This is where it all began and it utterly exudes personality in every issue. If you have not read these comics before and you're looking to get started, this is 100% the place to start if you don't mind the form factor. If you're a hardcore fan, this is a no brainer. It's made well, has so much content and that content is all sublime. (The Compendium and Last Ronin review pages are mixed together as of now, so if you see this while looking for Last Ronin reviews, buy that, that's a good one too lol)
I’m giving Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin a 5 out of 5 stars. This graphic novel is a standout addition to the TMNT universe, delivering a gripping and emotionally charged storyline. The artwork is stunning, with detailed and dynamic visuals that bring the story to life. The narrative is both dark and compelling, offering a fresh and mature take on the beloved characters. It’s a thrilling read for longtime fans and newcomers alike. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys intense, high-quality storytelling in the TMNT world.
