First, this is quite an attractive hardcover book. Beautiful design, build and cover art. Pages are fairly heavy semi-gloss stock. Illustrations are cool and add a nice touch, though screen shots are just okay overall - nothing special. I'll touch on this aspect more later in the review. In general though, you do feel like you really got something special for your $36. Okay, that's out of the way. What you are presumably considering buying this book for is game guide information, right? Well have no fear because this book largely delivers. Be advised that the book is thick and with good reason. As many of you already know, Zelda BOTW is a HUGE game with lots to do. As expanse as the game is, it's entirely unlikely that you'd be able to find and/or solve all elements of the game on your own (unless you have an unlimited amount of time to spend for the next year or so). So this book proves quite useful in getting the most game play value per dollar and hour spent. The book is well organized. Game aspects are broken down by type (enemies, shrines, foods, weapons, potions, parts, etc.). So it's easy to get a comprehensive look at what you're dealing with in the game on a macro level if you desire. This is great to use as a reference of what's actually available in the game and for just browsing about, especially if you are a beginner with BOTW. However, this isn't the typical way you will use the book as you progress through the game. I have found that by far the most practical and effective way to utilize the book is via the index. Generally, I play the game and reference the book only when I run into an issue or have a question. Have a shrine that is giving you fits? (There are plenty that will). Want to know where to find a hidden shrine in a certain territory? Or what about the best recipes to cook your food resources? Virtually any aspect of the game can be accessed from the index which is organized alphabetically by keyword. Once you start using the book this way, it becomes evident that a lot of labor hours and care went into organizing and putting it together. But I do have a few minor quibbles. First, the print is just too small and the font choice is too thin. No, I'm not as young as I used to be but I'm also not totally blind. Yet, I often find I have trouble trying to read the tiny script during game play. Text just doesn't pop off the page as it should. I suppose the print size was a business decision to keep the size and weight of the book down. I can understand that since the book is already very thick as it is. Just know that if you play in a semi-dark to dark room (which many people do), you will be getting up to flick on a light to reference the book from time to time. My other quibble is the in-book photographs. As I indicated earlier, the quality of the screen captures is okay - but not great. Not really a big deal, though I think the screen shots could have been better in terms of color and vibrancy. What is a big deal is that these photos are again, way too small to be practically useful at times. The screen shots in the book are often used as a visual reference for the accompanying instructions. You will occasionally be frustrated by the fact that you just can't make out the necessary details in a given photo as provided. There are some (not many) times in the game where a clear, sharp picture is necessary to provide the visual guidance you want. It comes up just enough to be frustrating, but is not a deal breaker. So the book is great overall and well worth the $36 if you intend to play through Zelda BOTW. Just know that it does not come without a few little annoyances, hence the 4 star review instead of 5. Still, I think it's the best of what's out there in terms of a guide for Zelda BOTW.
Absolutely incredible how well organized and how much information is in this book, graphics are great as well. I bought this to play BOTW with my son so we didn't spend hours solving puzzles. We used this in situations where we didn't know what to do next. My son also spends so much time flipping through this and exploring the maps when its not time to be playing. He was able to defeat all DeVine beasts and Gannon on his own with the help of this book (he is 5!)
It took me a lil while to get used to how the book is laid out but now it's so easy to just flip through to what I want to find. If I don't know where something would be, the glossary in the back is really helpful. I don't find it extremely hard to read like others have complained about. The font is skinny so it makes it look like it's printed in a dark gray. I think that's why some have trouble with it. I also have not had any issues with the binding. In fact I think the separate map is harder to deal with because it's so large and dark. The creases are going to rip soon from folding back and forth. It's not feasible to have this laid out on a table like a war map when you're trying to play. Overall this is one of the best purchases I've made recently and easily worth the money. It's packed to the gills with information and nicely laid out. My only suggestion would be to add two or three ribbon bookmarks so you can flip back and forth.
Incredibly helpful book I used it so much that I had to repair the book because it fell apart on me but it’s a really good book. I highly recommend.
This book has all the information you’ll ever need to find and use anything in the game. Good quality book and lots of pictures too
This book is huge and has a map, it’s a great resource for anybody wanting a guide throughout their time with the game.
I am so happy that I bought this book! A few days after starting BOTW for the first time, I saw this at a store and thought, "wow, that would be great!" but with the $40 price tag I left it on the shelf. Later that day I went on Amazon to look it up... lo and behold it was on sale for $22! I ordered it immediately, and have used it every day since. As a brand new BOTW player this guide has been invaluable. I've heard such wonderful things about this game for years and had a feeling I would love it too, and while that was true from the start, I still found myself very overwhelmed by just how vast this game is. I didn't really know where to start and had a hard time figuring things out on my own since the game offers little in terms of tutorials and whatnot. I was Googling every time I got stuck (which was a lot lol) and while the internet is a great resource, it began to feel like an even grander jigsaw puzzle trying to piece together info from dozens of different articles. Enter this book, and my gaming life has changed. It has just about everything I could need and more. The primer in the beginning was fabulous with all the tips about combat, environmental factors, etc, and all of the other chapters about specifics in the game are amazing. I seriously would have never figured out some of those shrines and side quests without this guide, or anything else for that matter lol. My gameplay has improved ten fold since buying this book and I'm enjoying BOTW more than I would without it, surely. I have the book open on my desk every single time I play now. And the MAP! The map is wonderful. I haven't unlocked the whole map in the game yet, so having a paper copy to refer to is really helpful. It's a little cumbersome to open/fold up every time, but honestly there's something about having a physical copy that's easier to look at than "interactive" maps online sometimes so I'm not bothered by it. As far as the physical aspects of the book go, I'm happy with the copy I got. I saw a lot of reviewers had issues with damage, and the top right corner of mine is a little bent from transit but otherwise the book is in really good shape. I agree that the text could be bigger too, but with the whole book at a whopping 500+ pages I understand why it's so small. I don't see any issues with the pictures either, they're good enough quality for me and show what I need. If there's anything I want to see a little more in depth I still turn to the internet, but overall the book is my first and usually last resource every time. And of course, the cover is beautiful too--it'll be a great display/collector's piece for whenever I'm finished with it. To sum up this long review, I couldn't be more pleased. This guide is worth every penny of the $22 I paid, and after cracking it open and seeing all it has to offer, it's worth the full $40 price tag too. I foresee myself enjoying BOTW for a long, long time to come with this book right by my side. And whenever I get to play TOTK, I'll be buying that guidebook too! I'm officially addicted to the Legend of Zelda franchise and this guidebook is partially to thank for it. :)
